How to Debug Broken Checkout and Signup Flows

Test the path that fails, not only the one that works.

Test what happens when checkout or signup goes wrong. Can someone correct invalid input, retry a failed request, or continue after a slow response?

Write down the expected journey

Identify the required steps and the visible confirmation at the end. Record the browser, device, account state, and inputs needed to reproduce the failure. Use test accounts and test payment modes for investigation.

Checkout abandonment and form abandonment caused by bugs

Try invalid input, expired authentication, a slow response, and a rejected request. Check whether validation is visible, whether submitted data survives, and whether the button returns to a usable state.

Follow the request

Check whether the click sent a request, whether it reached the intended endpoint, what response came back, and how the UI handled it. This separates a broken interaction from a backend rejection or an upstream failure.

Review a targeted fix

If a payment request fails and the loading flag never resets, the customer cannot retry. Reset the loading state when the request completes, show the error, and preserve the payment provider’s safeguards against duplicate charges.

Verify the full recovery

A regression test should demonstrate the original failure and the intended recovery. Re-test the affected environment after deployment, including the successful path and a safe retry.
